What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Burst pipe
Water spraying or pouring from a pipe, in a wall, ceiling or under the house.

Smell of gas
A rotten egg smell near an appliance, the meter or outside the house.

Sewage coming up through a toilet, shower, floor waste or gully in the yard.

No hot water
No hot water at all, especially with young children, elderly or unwell people at home.

Water reaching power points, the switchboard, lights or appliances.
What should I do right now?

Burst pipe
Turn off the water main. In most Brisbane homes it is next to the water meter near the front boundary, close to the footpath. Turn the tap clockwise, then call us.

Gas smell
Leave the building straight away. Do not use light switches, phones or flames inside. From outside, call your gas distributor’s emergency line, or 000 if anyone is in danger.

Sewage backup
Stop using toilets, showers and sinks, keep children and pets away, and do not touch the waste. Call us so we can clear the line.

No hot water
Check whether the hot water circuit breaker has tripped. Do not open covers or relight a gas unit if you are unsure, and call us.

Flooding near electrics
Stay clear of the water. Do not touch switches or appliances. Call 000 if there is immediate danger, and call an electrician before the power is turned back on.
When to call 000
Call 000 if anyone is injured, if you smell gas and there is a fire or anyone feels unwell, if water has reached live electrics and someone is at risk, or if there is any other immediate danger to life.
